Mandeville, Louisiana, USA Having arrived in Hattiesburg and meeting Paco, Alana and I ran down to the Coffee House to tend to a few details. Her Oldest son, Norman Alan, his wife, Brooke, their son Tyler and daughter, Haley along with Haley's friend, Kirsten, all came down Saturday night too!
First thing Sunday morning, we head down to the Lakefront with the kayaks. Alana and I stayed on the seawall and I had a chance to take it all in!
Lake Pontchartrain, was a freshwater lake annually flushed by the Mississippi River from the west. A hundred and fifty years ago the "smart" people begin to levy the river. Now, the Pontchartrain Lakes (Lake Maurapa (sp?), Pontchartrain, Bourgne, St Catherine, to the Rigolets and the Mississippi sound and finally, the Gulf of Mexico), now are brackish - salt/fresh. Unfortunately, it will soon be oiled as soon as a hurricane/tropical storm pushes north.
But, until then, this shallow lake averages about 12 feet deep and has a muddy/sandy bottom. It is filled with fish, crabs, alligators!, and such.
